Wheal Coffee Shop Project
The Wheal Coffee Shop Project is a work skills and personal development programme for adults with learning disabilities. It gives people the chance to learn new skills, build confidence, contribute to a community project and take steps toward greater independence.

What participants gain
-
Practical work skills - including hospitality basics, barista training, customer interaction, teamwork and safe working routines.
-
Confidence and self‑belief - people discover what they can do, often surprising themselves with new abilities.
-
Purpose and routine - regular sessions help build structure, reliability and positive daily habits.
-
Social connection - friendships form naturally through shared tasks and supportive teamwork.
-
Progression pathways - participants can move into volunteering, further training or supported roles within the Hub.
-
A sense of ownership - everyone involved contributes to something the whole community will use and enjoy.
The Wheal Coffee Shop Project sits within MCH’s wider work‑skills programme and gives adults with learning disabilities the chance to learn by doing. Sessions are structured and supported, with participants taking on real responsibilities that make a visible difference to the project. People work at their own pace, with encouragement and gentle guidance woven into every activity.
As confidence grows, so does independence, and every achievement is recognised and celebrated.
This project matters because opportunities for real experience can be limited for many adults with learning disabilities. The Wheal Coffee Shop Project creates a safe, supportive environment where people can develop meaningful skills, build routine, and feel valued for their contribution. It strengthens wellbeing, reduces isolation and helps participants feel part of something bigger - all core aims of MCH’s commitment to inclusion and community connection.
